The TURKEY HILL EXPERIENCEThursday, August 2
We begin our visit to Lancaster County with a visit to the country's oldest farmers' market, in the heart of Amish country. Occupying a beautiful 120 year old red brick building that is chocked-full of local character, you will find regional food specialties including Pennsylvania Dutch sausage, scrapple and headcheese. You'll also find preserves, including chowchow (pickled vegetables in a spicy mustard sauce), and bread and butter pickles. The bakery section is full of fresh baked homemade breads and rolls as well as pies and cakes. From here we will proceed to the Turkey Hill Experience, a 26,000 square foot attraction that was once an historic silk mill. The Experience will include interactive exhibits (including a chance to make your own ice cream flavor) and milk a mechanical cow. Turkey Hill is also renowned for its tea products and you will visit the tea area where that is discussed and you get to smell different tea leaves. It's a summer day in the country. Lunch is included and will be enjoyed on arrival in the Turkey Hill Restaurant where you may choose a salad, a sandwich, a side and a Turkey Hill beverage. Wayside theatre presents "The Nerd"Friday, August 10
You'll bust a gut laughing at this play. This now-classic comedy by the late Virginia playwright, Larry Shue, features one of the nerdiest of nerds who becomes the houseguest that anyone would love to send packing. THE STORY: Now an aspiring young architect in Terre Haute, Indiana, Willum Cubbert has often told his friends about the debt he owes to Rick Steadman, a fellow ex-GI whom he has never met but who saved his life after he was seriously wounded in Vietnam. He has written to Rick to say that, as long as he is alive, "you will have somebody on Earth who will do anything for you"--so Willum is delighted when Rick shows up unexpectedly at his apartment on the night of his thirty-fourth birthday party. But his delight soon fades as it becomes apparent that Rick is a hopeless "nerd"--a bumbling oaf with no social sense, little intelligence and less tact. And Rick stays on and on, his continued presence among Willum and his friends leading to one uproarious incident after another, until the normally placid Willum finds himself contemplating violence which, happily, is staved off by the surprising "twist" ending. Lunch is included prior to the performance at the Historic Strasburg Hotel We will depart the Featherstone Shopping Center at 9:45 a.m. and the Davis Ford Shopping Center at 10:30 a.m. We will arrive back at Davis Ford at approximately 5:45 p.m. and the Featherstone Shopping Center at 6:30 p.m.

Museum of the ConfereracyThursday, August 23
Reservations Open: June 13

This year begins the Sesquicentennial Remembrance of the Civil War. There are special exhibits in Richmond, VA that warrant a visit. A docent tour of the White House of the Confederacy will be followed by two special exhibits in the Museum of the Confederacy. The "The War Comes Home" takes a look at how the war altered the daily lives and accustomed roles and responsibilities of Southern civilians and how they coped with shortages caused by the federal naval blockade, the erosion of slavery and the destruction of property. It also looks at how families and communities coped with death on an unprecedented scale. The Museum's Vaults," features objects that tell interesting stories but are not related to important themes or events in history. Lunch is included at the Tobacco Company followed by a visit to the Virginia Historical Society. Using original objects, interactive technology and state-of-the-art audiovisual programs, this 3,000 square foot exhibition encourages visitors to consider how a single event, separated by 150 years can influence and address the question of today - what was gained, what was lost, what was undecided, and what was left for us to resolve.
